Debunking Procrastination: Understanding Your Brain's Nature

We often label ourselves as procrastinators or lazy.  But there's no need to feel bad about it. Our brain's natural tendency is to wait. Understanding this helps us move past self-judgment and take action.

I delayed writing this because my brain kept saying, “Tomorrow is better.” Why? Because our brain's primary function is to ensure survival. Trying something new introduces uncertainty, which the brain sees as a potential threat. Our brains are still wired like our ancestors' were, designed to avoid danger.

Additionally, the brain consumes 20% of the body’s energy, so it prefers routines that require less effort. It also wants to avoid failure, as failure brings uncertainty—a perceived threat to self-esteem and reputation.

In short, our brain tries to avoid uncertainty, yet the only certainty in life is uncertainty.

I Affirm: Today I recognize where my need for certainty is holding me back. I take a deep breath, embrace the unknown, and celebrate by trying something new!

Step by Step,

Jessie
