Reframing Fear: What If Everything Goes Right?

Even after years of coaching and being coached, I still have a fearful human brain that loves to alert me to all the things that might go wrong.

"What if this happens? And this? And oh god—THIS?!! What then?!"

My brain will take me straight down the rabbit hole, all the way to where I’m homeless and alone on the streets.

And, after all these years of coaching, the difference is that, most of the time, I no longer make myself wrong for having these thoughts.  I don’t fight them, numb them, or berate myself for them. Instead, I actually love this part of my brain, the part that’s just trying to keep me alive. I acknowledge it. I let it know I hear it.

Me: I know, I hear you. I totally get it. It can feel really scary to be human sometimes. And honestly? You are doing an amazing job at this whole life thing.

Brain: Wow. Thank you. But seriously—this could go wrong, and that is definitely going wrong, and what if this happens?!

Me: I know, I know. But…what if it all works out?

Brain: Um, excuse me? Clearly, it’s NOT working out. I just told you—this is wrong, and this might be wrong, and oh my god, what if—

Me: No, no. I hear you. But just…what if it did? What if it actually works out?

Brain: I mean…I guess it’s possible? I’m not saying it’s likely, but…

Me: But, what if it did, in fact, work out? I mean, hasn’t it actually been working out this whole time? I’ve always had what I needed. I’ve had love, support, opportunities—even in the hardest moments, I’ve made it through.

Brain: Huh. Yeah… I guess that’s true. We've always been ok, now that I think about it. I love you.

Me: I love you too. Thanks for working so hard for me, sweet brain, I SEE YOU! This whole being a conscious, sentient human being deal is a TRIP!

So today, I choose to sit in gratitude. I look for all the ways life has already worked out for me, and is currently working for me, sometimes in ways I couldn’t have predicted!

I Affirm: Life is for me.

Step By Step,

Jessie
