“Expect Nothing. Create Everything.”

Steve Chandler

Many of us have been conditioned to believe that getting what we truly want should be easy. If it's not easy, we think, if it doesn't just fall in our laps, then something must be wrong.

This mindset leads us to expect that our life’s purpose or calling will reveal itself without our having to search, and even struggle for it. When we are in the search and possibly in the struggle, we often conclude that we "just don’t know what to do.” But in reality, the thought “I just don’t know what to do” is simply a way our brain keeps us stuck in a comfortable, familiar place—a metaphorical cave that I often talk about.

The truth is, saying “I don’t know” really just means we haven’t made a decision yet. We’re standing at a point where we need to make a choice. And that’s perfectly okay! We don’t have to rush into a decision before we’re ready.

The habit of saying “I don’t know” often stems from childhood, when our needs were met without us having to make choices. If we were fortunate, food, shelter, transportation, and guidance were provided for us.

As adults, this behavior can show up as a sense of entitlement, often without us even realizing it. We might find ourselves stuck in repetitive, victim-like thinking, reacting to life rather than creating it. I know this all too well from personal experience.

My mentor tells a story about a man on his deathbed who suddenly realized that the small tasks he once resented—taking out the garbage, mowing the lawn—were actually privileges. Those chores were the supreme privilege of being engaged in his own life.

I affirm: "I choose to engage fully in my life. There is nothing I have to do. I choose to do things—or even better, I get to do them!”
