Why Change Feels Hard—and How to Move Through It
Our brain is wired to cling to the familiar, even when the familiar doesn’t serve us. It will fight for the status quo and argue for our limitations because, to the brain, the unknown feels like a threat.
The brain's primary job? To keep us safe and alive. That’s why change can feel so daunting.
When we decide to step into something new - whether it’s leaving a job, starting a new one, moving, quitting an addiction, launching a creative project, or beginning a workout routine — we are literally creating new neural pathways. The well-worn grooves of our old habits begin to atrophy. And that process can feel uncomfortable, even painful.
But here’s the exciting part: discomfort is a sign of growth! Your brain might resist, but that’s just its way of trying to protect you from the unknown. Avoiding the discomfort, is what can keep people stuck, living lives they simply endure instead of lives they love.
The good news is that there is light in the dark. As humans, we’re evolving. We’re waking up to the truth that with courage, support, and a willingness to face discomfort, we can move past our brain’s survival instincts. We can step boldly into lives filled with meaning, joy, and contribution.
I Affirm: Today I recognize when my brain is trying to protect me. I thank it, and then take one small, brave step forward toward the life I truly want.
Step by Step,
Jessie
