The Many Disguises of Fear—And How to Overcome Them
A big part of the human experience is fear, just as a big part of the human experience is love. I would say that the opposite of love isn’t hate; it’s fear.
As I continue along my journey in life, and especially in my work as a coach, I see that fear wears many disguises. It shows up as comparison, scarcity, paranoia, excuses, deflection, and justification. Each of these disguises creates specific thought patterns, each thought pattern with its own flavor. At their core, they all serve the same purpose: to limit us. To keep us in familiar territory.
Many people go through life believing the stories these disguises tell them, without even realizing that fear is running the show. I didn’t see it for a long time.
However, when I began speaking my fears out loud to my coach, the act of saying it out loud created just enough separation from the thought itself where I could finally see them for what they were, just thoughts. They had felt like boulders inside me: heavy, immovable, "just the way things were." But once I gave them a voice, their power over me diminished. I saw where I had a choice. I didn't have a choice over the initial fearful thought because my brain is designed to manufacture fear thoughts to keep me “safe”, but, when I said it outloud I could then choose a different thought, one that invited possibilities and revealed a new way forward.
I Affirm: Today I take a gentle peek inside and invite a fear to step forward. I am willing to say it out loud, even if only to myself, and in doing so, I create space for something new.
Step By Step,
